Budapest in 20 seconds

Budapest, Little Paris
Budapest rightfully earned the nickname “little Paris”, with its abundance of history, entertainment and international savior faire. You will find head turning, fashion trending cosmopolitans, bars that rival Brooklyn, New York’s monopoly on hipsterdom and history on every balcony, street and district you stroll through. The city is enchanting, exciting and affordable. You can experience European life and culture without spending your entire savings. We stayed in Budapest for five weeks in a private apartment near Heroes’ Square. During our five weeks we saw the ballet, the symphony, outdoor concerts, museums, ate a great restaurants (4 star and otherwise), went to world class thermal spas, swam along in the urban hustle as well as sat still in the relaxing cafe culture of Liszt Franc Square, all for an average of $100USD a day total for two people, including accommodations.
We gave our selves 20 seconds to list the “must dos/eat/see” for Budapest. Here is the Pepe Popo recommendations:
Walk across at least three bridges.
Ride the Funicular to Buda Castle.
Get a tattoo at Black Moon.
Go to Vintage Garden for a meal.
See heroes square at night.
Go to outdoor concert.
See as many concerts as you can.
Attend the Hungarian Ballet.
Find a night of Hungarian dancing.
Drink the BEST coffee Pilot Cafe at 76 Andrássy, (say “hi” to Max) on Andrassy Avenue.
Visit the small local market, Hunyadi Tér Market, in district VI, and eat the Langos from the Ma and Pa shop inside.
Don’t eat upstairs at the Great Market Hall – buy souvenirs, fresh fruit, sausages, cheese etc. from the vendors, but not a meal in the food court, as it’s overpriced and we were hard pressed to find anything close to delicious.
Eat the hot sauce.
Eat a pepper.
Go to Castle District and wander back in time.
Visit Vaci Street, but explore away from there more.
Look up at the balconies and the incredible facades of the buildings all over the city.
Go to West End mall for English movies (check the listings), try movie VIP if you speak Hungarian (bottomless popcorn).
Go to a ruin bar.
Purchase local and delicious wine at good prices from, Magyar Wine shop Szondi at Baskja.
Humble yourself with a visit to the House of Terror.
Go to Gellert baths – sit in the 40degree tub, then go in the cold plunge (do this if it’s safe for you to do so).
Get swirled around in the circular outdoor pool at Szentcheni.
Bonbonetti for candy, located on Andrassy Street near Opera house.
Follow the sound of outdoor music.
Run or walk Margaret island track.
Walk everywhere.
Google search “Budapest festivals.”
Go past Heroes’ Square, to view the extrodinary world’s largest hourglass and the monument to 1956 independence.
Go to the Modern Art Museum.
Eat the ice cream. It’s a national past time.
There you have it – Budapest in 20 seconds (give or take!). If you have travelled to Budapest – please comment and add your must dos.
